An old joke goes as follows:

A man stops another on the street, and asks him “Hi, can you tell me how to get to Royal Albert Hall please?” The man looks him up and down and replies “practice, mate, practice”!

The Hall, as it is popularly known, was built to fulfil the vision of Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s consort) and opened by Her Majesty in 1871. With the bold intention of being a central hall used to promote understanding and appreciation of Arts and Sciences, the Hall has been in continuous use since its opening.

Located on the southern edge of South Kensington in the City of Westminster, London, the Hall is particularly famous for holding the annual summer Proms concerts since 1941. On average, the capacity of the Hall can hold up to 5,200 seats depending on the event. Each year, it hosts more than 350 events; a number made more astounding by the diverse variety – ranging from classical concerts, rock and pop, ballet and opera, sports, awards ceremonies, etc.

As history goes, the first concert to be performed at the Hall was Arthur Sullivan’s cantata, On Shore and Sea. Other notable performances include the 25th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera in 2011, the royal premiere of the 24th Bond film, Skyfall in 2012, and in November 2012, the 100th anniversary performance of the Royal Variety performance which was attended by the Queen and Prince Philip. The Hall is also home to regular performers, such as Eric Clapton – playing host to his concerts almost annually for 20 years; and Shirley Bassey, who sang Happy Birthday for the Duke of Edinburgh’s 80th birthday concert in 2001, returning many more times until 2011, when she sang Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
